Compared to other Android Wear smartwatches of the first generation, the initial Asus ZenWatch was very much loved by virtually every. The round and stylish design was well accepted even by critiques and rivals despite the fact that it did not have a screen that is eye-searing or specs that are blockbuster. A successor has however being produced for the watch: The Asus ZenWatch 2.
Asus ZenWatch is a smartwatch which runs on the Android operating system. It was released on the 9th of November 2014 and initially ran on Android 4.4 W.2 operating system. It uses Bluetooth to connect to other android smartphones, running on version 4.3 and higher. It comes with a 4GB storage and 512MB memory. It also has a battery with 369mAh. The dimension of the watch is 51 by 39.9 by 7.9mm.
What is new about Asus ZenWatch 2.
Based on the technology used on the ZenWatch 2, there is no much difference between the Asus ZenWatch and the Asus ZenWatch 2. They both have 4GB of storage, 512M of memory (RAM) and CPU 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400.
The main aim behind the making of the ZenWatch 2 is to keep pace with the smartwatch market, which keeps evolving in a mature manner. Personalization and price were thus the major focus. They were looking to compete with the very cheap price of the Huawei watch.
The major difference for now is that the Asus ZenWatch 2 comes in 3 colors (rose gold, gun metal and silver) and has 2 sizes as opposed to the Asus ZenWatch that has only one color. It now depends on the preference of individuals. Men are however, likely to prefer the 22mm size which is bigger, while women should prefer the smaller 18mm size.
Bezel and Display of the Asus ZenWatch 2
It features a 1.63 inches 320 by 320 slightly pixelated display. The screen has a density of 278ppi on an AMOLED screen, which makes it not to be too bright. The smaller size of the smartwatch has a 280 by 280 resolution and a density of 274ppi on a 1.45 inches display.
The face is however big with the display looking tiny. It looks okay when looking at from far, but at a closer look, it is difficult to differentiate between the bezel and the display. The bezel is also comically and ridiculously thick.
Battery life and hardware of Asus ZenWatch
Despite the minimal changes to the hardware of the ZenWatch 2, there has been some progress. For instance, the Asus ZenWatch 2 now features a WiFi chip. The ZenWatch 2 comes with the fast charge technology which implies that in just a little more than 45 minutes, you can get a full battery. Within 36 minutes, you are able to get a 50 percent charge.
2 days is quoted to be how long the battery will last. The battery can however only last this long if you leave the Wi-Fi turned off, with the screen dim by using the always-on screen lower power. You would however only get about 36 hours of usage if you leave the Wi-Fi on and active as well as full brightness. While this is not exception, it is also not bad for a smartwatch battery.
The Asus Zen Watch 2 also does not come with a GPS. Based on the price however, this should not be a revelation. If you are thus a fan of fitness, you would have to look for a more expensive smartwatch that comes with GPS.
Some sensors have also been removed by Asus in the ZenWatch 2, so as to keep the price down. While the initial Asus ZenWatch has a bio sensor combo / 9-axis sensor, the ZenWatch 2 only comes with 6-axis, with accelerometer and gyroscope. The cost cutting is however believed to be sensible as only very few people tracks their bpm with a smartwatch.
The powering of the engine room of Asus ZenWatch 2 remains the same with Asus ZenWatch. The smartwatch experiences slight lags when it is being used. This should be as a result of the chipset.
Evolving Android Wear – Asus ZenWatch 2
The Asus ZenWatch 2 is a nice smartwatch that runs on Android. The main features are generally the same thing you will get on any other Android smartwatch. There are however some modifications on the Asus ZenWatch that differentiates it from other Android Smartwatches. There are very nice faces you can choose from, about 50 of them. Furthermore, it is possible to make your own live widgets arrays, custom text and face with an application that comes with the Asus Zen Watch 2.
Furthermore, the Asus ZenWatch 2 comes with some applications created by Asus. This improves on the normal experience that you get from most other Android wears and smartwatch. Some of these applications include features that aid in tracking activity, media and flavored messaging.
The software however has some bugs, which it is hoped would be fixed in an update. For instance the Messenger app on the Asus ZenWatch 2 is not working properly. Furthermore, the Asus Wellness and Asus Music software are more of bloatware.
The Asus ZenWatch 2 is a nice development by Asus. The features and capabilities of the smartwatch justify its price, as any improvement on its current features and capabilities would have led to more expenses. It is thus a good buy at the price.
